The Cause of Lower Back Pain After Deadlifts

pain No Comments »

Lower back pain after deadlifts can indicate an injury like a spinal disc herniation. No amount of stretching, or additional weight training can help in this regard. One needs to first find the causes of the lumbar back pain which, in most cases, is a breakdown in deadlifting technique/form. Once the mechanism behind the pain is eliminated, then only can training progress without the risk of further injury. Professional olympic weightlifters and powerlifters pay close attention to their lifting technique in order to prevent back injuries and enhance performance. It is for this reason that these athletes start out with an empty barbell or even lighter training aids, when they first learn the lifts. Remember, function follows form. In other words; to properly benefit from a functional movement, the technique of that movement must be good.

7 Causes of Back Pain and Headache.

In this video, I will talk about the 7 causes of back pain and headache.

Sometimes you may experience a headache and back pain that occurs at the same time.

There are several conditions that can cause these symptoms.

1. Injury.

Sometimes injuries, such as those sustained in a car accident, fall, or while playing sports, can cause headaches and back pain to occur together.

2. Poor posture.

Poor posture can put a strain on the muscles of your head, neck, and back.

Maintaining poor posture over time can lead to the development of both headache and backache.

3. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

PMS refers to a group of physical and emotional symptoms that occur between the time of ovulation and when a period starts.

Headache and back or abdominal pain are common PMS symptoms.

Other symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome can include.

Bloating.

Headaches and back pain are common causes of discomfort during pregnancy.

Other possible causes of discomfort include.

Constipation.
Frequent urination.
Nausea.

5. Infections.

Various infections can cause headaches and back or body aches to occur together.

One common example you may be familiar with is the flu.

Two other conditions are meningitis and encephalitis.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of brain tissue.

Meningitis can begin with general flu-like symptoms and quickly progress to more severe symptoms, such as.

Severe headache.
Stiff neck.
Fever.

6. Migraine.

Migraine is a condition involving intense, throbbing headaches.
The pain typically occurs only on one side of the head.

There’s some evidence that migraine and lower back pain are associated with each other.

7. Arthritis.

Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints, which can lead to pain and stiffness.

It typically gets worse as you age.

If arthritis occurs in your neck or upper back, you may experience headaches in addition to back and neck pain.

So just to recap, the 7 causes of back pain and headache are.

1. Injury.
2. Poor posture.
3. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
4. Pregnancy.
5. Infections.
6. Migraine.
7. Arthritis.

Back Pain Relief with Extension & Rotation Stretches – Ask Doctor Jo

pain No Comments »

Extension and rotation back stretches will help loosen your back and relieve pressure. Read Doctor Jo’s blog post about this video at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/back-extension-stretches

This video will show you some back extension and rotation stretches. If you are having low back pain, or if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc or bulging disc, these stretches will help relieve the pain. This will also help if you have a numbness or tingling going down one of your legs.

Start off on your stomach, or in prone. This will help you stretch your spine into extension. You can prop up on your elbows and hold it for a few minutes. If that is not enough stretch, you can push up onto your hands, but try to keep your hips on the ground as shown in the video to maximize the stretch in your lower back.

Next try some gentle rotation stretches on your back with your knees bent in hooklying. Gently rotate your bent legs from side to side. You can hold them on each side for 30 seconds or you can continuously rotate them back and forth. Again, try to keep your lower back on the ground. If you need more of a stretch, then you can bring your top leg up and over to rotate your whole lower body to one side and then the other. This will be done for 30 seconds, 3 times on each side.

The last one can be performed standing up. Put your hands on your hips and lean back. Try not to bend your knees, just at your lower back. Again, this will be done for 30 seconds, 3 times.

These stretches should not hurt. If they hurt, you are either pushing too hard, or not exactly doing it right. If there is sharp pain with any exercises or stretches, stop immediately and talk with your doctor or therapist.
